Finally when entering the game world you will find yourself alone in the streets near a town trying to figure what the hell is going down. Looking around I saw some players naked or dressed like Neanderthals flying from the top of a house – some kind of bug, rendering problem no idea, but a superb first impression nevertheless. Here you get no direction, no storyline, you are alone, your mom and dad kicked you out on the streets because you were bad, and now it’s up to you to survive. There is a help window that teaches you the basics on how to move, accessing inventory, and so on, like a knowledge base, but the introduction to this “tech demo” makes you wish to quit and uninstall. Now let me be clear here, even sandbox games must have a introduction system that gets the player in the world, teaches him the basic, makes him feel that he is exploring a new world, a huge one, with infinite possibilities. Having just a help window somewhere is useless, the player is not convinced that this is a living, interesting virtual world to explore. Indeed the outdoor graphics are good enough to keep you interested, but the performance is horrible. I believe they are huge memory leaks in the client, since at some point with many players near me (5-10), the client started to go from 50 FPS to 5, and sometimes it crashed. It could be only my problem but I doubt it, since I play most of today’s games on high details and Unreal is very good engine on good hands.

Tweaking with the engine and support I finally got some decent performance by reducing the maxLODsize from 4096 to 512 in nowengine.ini. This was my first sandbox quest, see? Since the programmers couldn’t implement graphic customization, only texture and shadows.

I explored the nearby town where some players were gathering materials from the air, since collision system it’s mess. Went outside the town and on the good side the outdoor environment is incredible, it’s huge, has good graphics and no loading screens. While outside the town I watched a player fighting some mobs and neither of them had a combat animation: they player just went to the pig, and the pig died. It could be lag or another “feature”.

After this I considered I had enough. I spent 3 hours in game only to be frustrated, quit and uninstall. So do I recommend this game to you the players? Well I’d say stay away from it unless you are real huge fan and you like unfinished games – this one seemed like an Alpha to me. I understand that they are indie developers but when you release a version to show the game to the world you have to show something decent, that has decent game design, level design, basic collision and animations.

“You WOW newb!” Wait! Wait! I am actually one of the hardcore players that love harsh PVP and sandbox games, where two of my favorite sandbox games are Mount and Blade and EVE Online (played 4 years), but there is a limit to how much trash I can take from a game while paying for it.

The game is still in open beta so don’t take my word for it, try the game, make your own opinion.

I really like indie companies because I know how hard is to make a game without a huge financial power and in the same time some of the best games I ever played were made by indie companies, or at least small companies. Unfortunately not all indie games have the design power and industry knowledge to release a polished or complete product. Sometimes this happens because of poor management or low financial backup and sometimes because the main developers are not that good at what they do.

Mortal Online wants to be a pure sandbox PVP mmorpg, much like Ultima back in the days, but it fails horribly right from the start. I followed the game, saw some videos, screenshots, I was expecting something decent or even great, only to find a tech buggy demo which they call open beta. While I am not a big fan of accessibility sessions and I’ve been to some of them, these developers clearly never heard of the concept or they don’t understand the basic game design principles, probably both.

From the start you are thrown into the character creation screen naked, with some basic options to change his appearance, but you barely succeed on doing anything. Moving on you get to choose your race, location, skills, and some kind of of class option, but from all these pages you get absolutely no info, tooltips, you might as well be blind. At the end you can enter you character name and choose a start location from multiple options that have zero information attached to them as well where some even have place holder description “Location Description to come…”

To be continued..

While there are many mmorpgs out here, not all people like the subscription models, so they play free mmorpgs. They are not exactly free because they all have shops that can offer you an advantage if you buy special items from there, but it’s not mandatory and in some, it’s not necessary at all if you know what you’re doing. Developers must get money someway in order to maintain the servers and the game, so that’s why we have these shops.

Below we made a list with the top 10 free mmorpgs we found for you guys. We will update this list from time to time, and some received or will receive detailed reviews. Click on the titles to open the game page for that specific game.

2010 has arrived and it’s been a few months since our latest update to this list. A few new games has arrived on the market and now we have a new Top 10:

1. Allods Online

Allods Online is a free to play massively multiplayer online role-playing game currently in development by Russian online game developer Astrum Nival. Based on the popular Allods series of games (known internationally as Rage of Mages) and featuring eight playable character classes, six races and an expansive and compelling world, it is set to win the hearts of gamers worldwide. The title’s unique setting features magical islands called allods that float in the living substance known as the Astral. With fierce player versus player and player versus environment combat plus epic battles between Astral ships, Allods Online offers a traditional fantasy MMORPG experience with a new science fiction twist.

2. DDO Unlimited

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (or DDO for short) is the only FREE to play premium Massively Multiplayer Online game (MMO) of its kind. Set in the vast and dangerous online world of Eberron, gamers discover hidden treasure, pummel monsters, and look to evade traps left behind by an ancient race. By leveraging the most active, most realistic combat system of any online game, DDO players deliver and feel every blow that goes into a baddie’s demise.

3. Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic is a fantasy MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), in which words can create, but also destroy. Here you can explore and discover a magical world full of wonders and ancient riddles. Encounter arcane and dangerous creatures and solve the mystery of a long-perished kingdom. You have access to a dual class system which gives you the freedom to combine your main and secondary class, in order to build your character the way you want conceive it. Learn professions and special skills, to forge mighty armor and weaponry or to enhance them. Accumulate unique in-Game collector’s cards, which provide you with information and data of all creatures you have already encountered. Relax after a hard day of labor in your own house, which you can arrange just the way you want to.

4. Anarchy Online Classic

Anarchy Online Classic is one of the oldest mmorpg games on the market, one of those that offers you complete control over your character, and at the same time it’s somewhat more complex than your average mmorpg game, but after you master it, you might love it. It’s not very friendly but it’s a good experience. Offers interesting features from possibility to have a car, or even a small hover craft, random mission generator, if you want to use it, territory battles, tons of dungeons, and the basic features of p2p mmorpg, but well made.

5. Project Torque

Project Torque is an online racing game, I can’t call it a mmorpg since it’s based on lobby system, but an entertaining game. Having the possibility to race, compete with other players, win credits and buy new cars, and customize them, leads to a fun experience. Also the racing system is well designed. It really delivers the feeling that you are on the road racing for the number one spot.

6. Atlantica Online

A decent free mmorpg with a turn-based combat similar to the one in Final Fantasy series, good graphics, and good features, from pvp combat to something similar to the tome of knowledge in Warhammer Online.

7. BattleForge

BattleForge is the next step in compelling RTS gameplay by taking the battles completely online. With co-op play, challenging tournaments, Guilds, chat rooms and a robust marketplace for trading and buying your cards; BattleForge is the first RTS to add integral social and community components to an exciting fantasy RTS.

8. Navy Field

Navy Field is a Massively Multi Player Online Tactics Game. Based on naval combat during WWII, Navy Field is unique in its attention to detail.

Similar to Project Torque, Navy Field is based on lobby system so it’s not really massive, but fights within this lobbies system can go with over 40 players at the same time.

This game will attract fans of the naval battles of the WWII, where they can take control over massive warships from destroyers to battleships and have complete control over their equipment and crew.

9. Mabinogi

Step into the realm of living fantasy, Erinn, Mabinogi’s fantasy world based on Celtic mythology is brimming with fantastic opportunities and endless possibilities.

Mabinogi is a free mmorpg game that with its simplicity comes with many original and simple features, making the game very interesting to play. Simple activities and high control over you avatar skills, job system where you help townsfolk with their daily life, these features deliver a fun experience and a new approach in some ways. Available for US, and soon for EU.

10. Free Realms

Free Realms is a free 3D virtual world with stunning unique graphics and fun, quirky activities. Free Realms is an attitude. It’s innovative, dynamic and deep.

There are a remarkable number of choices available to massively multiplayer online gamers compared to a few years ago, but medieval fantasy continues to be the most popular setting. In these games you create a character, don a sword or a spellbook, and venture off into a persistent online world in search of experience points. An Internet connection is required and these games typically charge a monthly subscription fee. I rely a lot on user feedback as well as my personal experience when rating these games, so if you have an opinion on the subject, feel free make a suggestion.

1.World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment muscled its way into the MMORPG market back in 2004 with this game based on their illustrious Warcraft strategy series. Although it does not rewrite the book on MMORPGs, exceptional artistry, nicely paced gameplay, an engaging world, solid PvP, and a great interface made World of Warcraft a favorite among fans of this genre. It’s easily the most refined and popular game of its kind with millions of players worldwide. The Battlechest version includes both the original game and the first expansion, The Burning Crusade.

Â

2.EverQuest II: The Shadow Odyssey

Many people discovered MMORPGs by playing EverQuest, so EverQuest II had high expectations to live up to, and it doesn’t disappoint. The graphics are outstanding, voiceovers are used extensively, character creation is very impressive, and the combat system is a cut above the rest. Since release there have been several expansions and adventure packs, and PvP servers have also been added to the game. The Shadow Odyssey is the game’s 2008 expansion, and it includes all previous expansions as well as the core game.

Â

3.Lord of the Rings Online

Set in the mythical world of J.R.R. Tolkien, Turbine has built a MMORPG around the famous story that in many ways defined the fantasy genre. The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar lets you experience the adventure as a Human, Hobbit, Dwarf, or an Elf, and is designed to bring you into contact with various members of the Fellowship along the way. PvP is offered through “monster play,” which allows players to temporarily assume the role of monsters in an optional battleground. It’s an impressive rendition of Middle-earth that has had extensive content updates since launch.

Â

4.Aion Online

The biggest MMORPG release of 2009 was NCsoft’s Aion, and it has been satisfying some MMORPG fans cravings for something a little different. The game introduces flying combat as a central mechanic and it’s set in a high-fantasy world with impressive graphics. Aion has many elements in common with other RPGs, but it’s a PvP-centric game where high-level play involves capturing fortresses and artifacts in direct competition with the other player faction as well as an NPC faction.

Â

5.Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

A gritty world with many adult themes winding through it, Age of Conan is a MMORPG intended for a mature audience. The combat system is very unique, requiring melee characters to swing their weapon in different directions, allowing complex combination attacks, and giving you defensive choices to make as well. At the game’s high levels, guilds can build cities and keeps which can be attacked by other players. Age of Conan fell a little short of expectations at launch, but like most games of this kind, improvements are implemented with each patch.

6.Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

Mythic Entertainment’s Warhammer Online, like the famous table-top RPG it’s based on, concentrates on realm vs. realm (RvR) conflict between the forces of Order and Destruction. Every zone in the game has an area that is dedicated to RvR with several objectives in it which ultimately decide who controls the zone, culminating in a siege of the enemy’s capital city. The game has potential, but some of the siege mechanics seem a little off, and the engine tends to choke more than most on large numbers of players.

7.Final Fantasy XI

The award-winning Final Fantasy series has been adapted into this famous MMORPG from Square Enix. Three powerful nations try to protect the world of Vana’diel from the hostile beastmen. Note that FFXI is a significant departure from other Final Fantasy games, and it can be daunting for casual players. It’s also the first MMO that allows PS2, Xbox 360, and PC users play in the same universe. The Ultimate Collection. which arrived in 2009, includes the core game and all previous expansions.

Â

8.Lineage II

Like its predecessor, Lineage II focuses on battles with other players and large-scale siege warfare. This time it’s fully 3D, with visuals powered by the Unreal graphics engine. Guilds challenge each other for control of the game’s castles in scheduled PvP events. Like most Korean games, it uses a point-and-click movement system. The North American version has a number of features to lessen the level grind a little, which appears to be paying off. The Epic Edition is bundled with all 5 earlier Chronicles.

Â

9.Vanguard: Saga of Heroes

A huge seamless world, elaborate crafting, and a diplomacy system with which you can sway NPCs are among the features offered by Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. It’s relatively demanding compared to many recent MMORPGs, both in terms of hardware requirements and time requirements, which isn’t to everyone’s liking. There is a considerable amount of depth to the game, and it’s an ambitious project with a lot of potential.

Â

10.EverQuest

EverQuest continues to hold a special place in the hearts of MMORPG fans, being the first 3D game of its kind to catch on in North America. It still has a large player base, and likely has more content than any of its competitors. The game is set in a mythical realm full of all the usual halflings, ogres, healers, necromancers, and monsters, featuring a remarkable level of character and class specialization.
